(far away things)

(far away things)

The earthy smell of manure

From the cows across the street

The falsetto buzz of the small plane above

Jetting to its next retreat

The neighborhood cat crawling through the tall grass

Hunting for a tasty treat

A memory drifts in of a similar day

When I'd look down to see you right by my feet

Out in the yard, taking slow steps

Going at your preferred pace

My whole soul overwhelmed with love

Every time you'd look up at my face

Your ears would twitch with every moo of the cow

The plane, a wondrous bird to behold

The scent of the cat filling your nose with stories

And you'd cling to every word being told

You’d take it all in, using all of your senses

To be present in each moment with me

You taught me that magic can be seen everywhere

Even when aging eyes can just barely see

Some of these things are nice from afar

Some things are more bittersweet

Losing you left my whole soul ajar

My heart laboring to beat

I wonder now if the little teacher by my feet

Always considered me a far away thing

But he knew that magic would keep us together forever

By an invisible, indestructible string

Because as I walk towards the cows, and clock the cat’s path

And hear the plane start to descend

I remember that things don’t have to stay far

Especially not my best friend

So no matter how far, no matter how near

No matter what we can or can’t see

My four-legged best friend, my very good boy,

You will always be present with me
