(secret for safekeeping)

(secret for safekeeping)
if her secret
is not-so-secret
is it still a secret?
when does their nonchalance
become negligence?
when does their disregard
regard them as accomplice?
when will they tell her
that they will keep her safe
rather than
“your secret is safe with me”?
she no longer knows how to cry for help
because she’s learned that help only makes her cry
so she decides
to become as small and hidden as a whisper
because her best chance of staying safe
is to become a secret herself
